The ultimate 3D printing materials guide: how to choose the right resin

Choosing the right resin is the single most important step in unlocking the full potential of resin 3D printing. Whether your goal is capturing razor-sharp details on a display model, manufacturing a flexible rubber gasket, or producing a certified biocompatible medical device, every liquid polymer behaves differently.

This comprehensive guide is designed to cut through the chemical jargon, breaking down each major resin type so you can confidently select the exact material properties your project demands.

Resins & applications explained

Standard resins

The go-to choices for everyday printing. Standard resin captures microscopic details effortlessly and cures incredibly quickly.

  • Best for: miniature figurines, tabletop gaming models, display pieces, and rapid visual prototyping.
  • Pros: highly economical, ultra-sharp detail retention, very easy to dial in and print.
  • Cons: inherently brittle; parts will easily chip or snap if dropped onto a hard surface.

Tough & durable resins

Tough resins are engineered to overcome the brittleness of standard resins. These materials are modified with urethane monomers to give them high structural integrity, impact resistance, and slight flexibility under stress.

  • Best for: functional enclosures, snap-fit joints, electronic casings, and moving mechanical assemblies.
  • Pros: excellent shock absorption, parts can bend slightly before breaking, easy to drill or thread.
  • Cons: slightly lower detail sharpness compared to standard resin, slightly higher viscosity.

Engineering & rigid resins

Rigid resins are formulated for maximum stiffness and zero flexing under load. These resins are often reinforced with glass micro-particles to provide incredible structural strength and exceptional resistance to thermal deformation.

  • Best for: industrial jigs, manufacturing fixtures, wind-tunnel testing models, and high-temperature manifolds.
  • Pros: extreme structural rigidity, high heat deflection temperatures, stays perfectly straight under load.
  • Cons: very low impact resistance (brittle under sudden shocks), requires powerful UV curing stations.

Biocompatible medical

An elite, highly regulated tier of engineering materials manufactured in an FDA-registered, ISO 13485 facility. Formlabs BioMed resins are rigorously tested and certified to ISO 10993 and USP Class VI standards for medical safety. These specialist polymers range from rigid guides to flexible, skin-safe components, allowing medical professionals to print patient-specific tools and devices safely.

  • Best for: surgical cutting guides, skin-contacting wearables, and fluid-pathway medical hardware.
  • Pros: certified biocompatible for mucosal membrane, tissue, or long-term skin contact; fully compatible with industry-standard autoclave and gamma sterilisation methods.
  • Cons: premium medical pricing, requires strict adherence to Formlabs' validated wash and cure protocols to guarantee certified biocompatibility.

Buy medical resin

Flexible & elastic resins

Flexible resins behave exactly like vulcanised rubber. TThey possess incredible stretchiness (known technically as high elongation at break) and fantastic tear resistance, allowing them to stretch, compress, and bend before springing back to their original shape.

  • Best for: custom gaskets, seals, vibration dampers, wearable cosplay elements, and ergonomic grips.
  • Pros: superb impact defense, completely rubber-like elasticity, excellent fatigue resistance.
  • Cons: difficult to print (requires slow lift speeds and heavy, thick support structures), hard to post-process.

Buy flexible resin

Castable / jewellery wax resins

Castable resin is a highly specialised material blended with real liquid wax. It is designed specifically for investment casting processes, meaning it creates a solid model that can be encased in plaster and burned away completely in a furnace without leaving a trace of ash.

  • Best for: custom jewellery casting, dental models (crowns/bridges), and precision metalwork moulding.
  • Pros: zero ash residue during burnout, flawless capturing of microscopic engraving and filigree details.
  • Cons: premium price point, requires highly specific, strict curing and burnout schedules.

Tips for resin success

  • Temperature matters: resin hates the cold. If your printing room is below 20 °C, the liquid becomes thick and viscous, leading to massive print failures. Keep your resin warm for flawless flow.
  • Mix it well: resin formulas naturally separate into layers if left sitting in the vat or bottle. Always shake your bottle thoroughly (or stir the vat gently with a silicone spatula) before printing.

Choose your resin

Ready to turn your designs into reality? Whether you need ultra-detailed Standard resin for crisp prototypes, flexible polymers for rubber-like seals, or certified Formlabs BioMed materials for medical-grade applications, we have the perfect liquid polymer for your next project.
